Vandals who set fire to a Christmas tree placed next to the Southernmost Point buoy, causing damage to the iconic structure, have been identified and are expected to surrender to authorities.

KEY WEST — Two white males who placed a Christmas tree in front of the Southernmost Point buoy and set it on fire, causing extensive damage to the iconic landmark, are being sought by police.

According to Key West Police Department spokeswoman Alyson Crean, sometime between 3 and 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, the two suspects placed the tree in front of the buoy and ignited the tree. The Key West Fire Department extinguished the blaze, Crean said.

If captured, the pair would face charges of criminal mischief, Crean said, noting the incident is under investigation.
