MARATHON — A 23-year-old Lakeland man was arrested last Wednesday after allegedly fleeing from deputies on U.S. 1.

Jaaziel Hector Santana was charged with fleeing and eluding, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Juan Carlos Marino saw a northbound Volkswagen at 1:06 a.m. near mile marker 59 with a tag obstruction, reports say. He turned on his lights and sirens and attempted to perform a traffic stop.

The car failed to stop and continued northbound. Marino observed the driver, later identified as Santana, hunching over, reaching toward the passenger side and moving around inside the vehicle.

The Volkswagen stopped on the Long Key Bridge. A strong odor of marijuana was emanating from the car. There was a large amount of “shake” in the interior as well as an empty mason jar, report say. Marino noticed Santana’s tongue was green and small green, leafy substances in his mouth.

Santana denied eating marijuana prior to the stop. Marino called paramedics to have ensure Santana was medically cleared to be taken to jail.
