A Key West woman was arrested Wednesday after she allegedly tried to steal several items including a bicycle.
Valerie Lee Lamberson, 60, was charged with petit theft.
Around 7:36 p.m., Key West Police Department officers responded to the Kmart on North Roosevelt Boulevard after receiving a report of a woman in custody for theft. Officers met with the store's loss prevention officer, who stated Lamberson attempted to steal a 26” bicycle, a bottle of Dawn dish soap and Tylenol. The total value of the items was estimated to be $170.79, according to the report.
The loss prevention officer explained he saw Lamberson on surveillance cameras placing the smaller items in her purse, grab the bicycle off the rack and attempt to leave the store. The store employee was able to stop Lamberson outside.
Lamberson reportedly said she knew her actions were wrong, but added that she was going through financial hardship and needed the smaller items at home. She also said she took the bike because she didn't want to walk back to her residence.
Lambersin was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, but she was released the next day.
