Guy deBoer's boat Spirit is seen in the surf off the coast of Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands.

Key West sailor Guy deBoer, who was attempting to circumnavigate the globe as a participant in the Golden Globe Race, was forced early Sunday to abandon his boat after hitting rocks amid heavy surf near Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands, according to the GGR's Facebook page.

DeBoer was able to make it to shore following a Mayday call alerting rescue personnel that his Tashiba 36, Spirit, was on the rocks and taking water. Fellow racer Kersten Neuschafer, the only woman taking part in the competition, contacted Race Control officials after hearing deBoer's radio call for help.
