A Big Pine Key man pleaded no contest Thursday to possession of queen conch and was sentenced to 10 days in jail.
Walter Moody, 70, was also sentenced to a six-month term of probation and ordered to perform community service and pay court costs, according to the prosecutors.
On Nov. 30, 2019, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers responded to Moody’s residence on Iris Drive after a neighbor allegedly witnessed multiple queen conch being unloaded from a vessel a day earlier, reports stated.
A search of his freezer discovered seven dead queen conch. Moody reportedly admitted he was going to keep the shells and use the meat for conch salad, reports stated.
