Betty Boxell Carey, 93, of Tallahassee, Florida, died peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020. She was born on April 2, 1927 in Peru, Indiana to James and Kate (Hedges) Boxell.
She was preceded in death by both parents and a younger brother, Bill Boxell. She is survived by her husband, William A. Carey, Jr. (Allen) of Tallahassee, son Bill Carey (Lisa) of Dobson, North Carolina, daughter Christina Harrelson (Steve) of Tallahassee and grandsons Tyler and Cory Harrelson of Tallahassee. Also surviving are various nieces and nephews.
Betty met the love of her life, Allen, on a Caribbean cruise in 1962. Soon thereafter, she relocated to Key West, Florida, where they were married and raised their family. During her time on the island, she was active in many organizations and will be fondly remembered for her volunteer work at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church and school, as well as various youth and scouting organizations. She was always an extremely dedicated, hard worker who loved to be involved. Upon retirement, she and Allen relocated to Tallahassee to be closer to their grandchildren.
A private funeral mass was held on Sept. 25, 2020 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Tallahassee, Florida followed by a graveside service and burial at Meadow Wood Memorial Park.
